DISCO by Year

DISCO: Purpose

The first Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography (DISCO) was held in Honolulu, HI from 26 February to 2 March 1978, followed by DISCO II in Miami, FL in 1979, then by all subsequent symposia in the State of Hawai‘i.In October 2018, we will hold the 26th DISCO symposium in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i. This symposium, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), brings together new doctoral graduates in chemical oceanography to create cohort groups of scientists at the start of their professional careers. The symposium fosters interactions between participants, providing a venue for the new PhDs to present their research to each other in a formal setting and including multiple informal opportunities for one-on-one exchange of ideas.

For the last several meetings, PODS (Physical Oceanography Dissertation Symposium) has run concurrently with DISCO, with many opportunities for cross-meeting interactions.
